Alicante is one of the most popular and important tourist destinations along the East Coast of Spain. Situated in the centre of the Costa Blanca, the city is dominated by the Castle of Santa Barbara and is full of religious and civil architecture.
One of the most striking buildings is the Gothic Church of Santa Maria built in the 16th Century on top of an old Arab mosque. Across from the church is the Casa de la Aseguralda Museum built in the 17th Century. The museum houses an amazing collection of contempory art by many famous artists including Pablo Picasso.
Well worth a visit is the Plaza del Ayuntamiento (the city-council square) in the old quarter of Alicante which houses the Town Hall and the Cathedral of Saint Nicholas where Herrera and Baroque styles are brought together.
The coastline is a favoured spot with the people of Alicante and the Explanada de Espana promenade, across from the port, is a vibrant mix of terraces and pavement cafes. The ports breakwater offers a modern leisure area and the beach of El Postiguet presents a beautiful spot for enjoying the sun and sea.
