Belize City is made up of many wooden buildings that exude colonial charm, and it has many natural and historical attractions. In downtown Belize City, already distinctive for its colonial architecture, it is now also the centre for dozens of craft vendors who have set up in the area around a picturesque tourism village on the site of the former Customs Wharf area. St. John's Cathedral is built from bricks brought from England as ship's ballast, it is the oldest Anglican Church in Central America, in the past it served as a venue for the crowning of the Kings of the Mosquito Coast. The Marine Terminal and Museum, has an amazing collection of Belize marine heritage on display. Belize has the highest concentration of Mayan sites of all the countries in Central America, there are several important Mayan sites situated on the mainland such as Altun Ha and Xunantunich. The Museum of Belize is a beautifully restored brick building that was built as a colonial prison in the 1800’s, and operated as Her Majesty's Prison until 1993.
