Located near where the Caribbean meets the Bay of Honduras is the small and beautiful Hunting Caye. The coral and abundant sea life make for perfect snorkelling or diving. Hunting Caye is the main island of the Sapodilla Cayes group in Belize. A British colony for more than a century, it was known as British Honduras until 1973, and became an independent nation in 1981. The Sapodilla Cayes Marine Reserve encompasses the southern-most section of the Belize Barrier Reef and includes fourteen sand and mangrove Cayes. Hunting Caye beach rings the eastern edge of the island, partially encircling a shallow bay. This beach is also a main turtle nesting site in Belize. Late in the summer, the caye is home to a large number of nesting Hawksbill sea turtles. There is also a large and dense coconut forest, and be sure to visit the manned lighthouse station.
