L'Ile Rousse meaning Red Island, has been named after the russet coloured rocks that extend out towards the sea. The contrasting white sandy beaches and the bustling market place, has enabled Ile Rousse to become the third busiest resort on the island. The pace here is slow and relaxed. Place Paoli, the large village square, often has a game of boules taking place.
With an excellent beach to the south, and small rocky islands to the north, L’Ile-Rousse is certainly set in a lovely location. The architecture of the town, largely dates from the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. L'Ile-Rousse has a planned layout of straight streets, lined with cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques that often showcase the talents of local artisans. The centre of the town itself is Place Paoli, a square that is open to the sea to the west, and that offers a pleasant covered market. It is an ideal place from which to explore both the old and the new town. The old town, with its paved streets and quaint old houses is very picturesque.
