Manta is city in Manabí Province, Ecuador. It is economically, the third most important city of Ecuador. Manta has existed since Pre-Columbian times. It was a trading post for the Mantas. Its main economic activity is tuna fishing. In Manta are located the beaches of Tarqui and El Murcielago. Its main beach, Murcielago, has a modern boardwalk with a variety of restaurants offering local culinary specialties and the region's most delicious drinks. Nearby is the small town of Montecristi, founded in the early 1600`s, with its colonial architecture this small town is best known for its wickerwork weaving. At La Pila (The Fountain) area outside of Manta, there is a special area where the locals sell their wares, the star attraction is the local art pottery, quality craftsmanship is typical of Ecuadorian pottery at La Pila. Early in the morning, the east end of Tarqui beach is a hive of activity, vendors carts tail the morning crowd, selling rows upon rows of shark, tuna, swordfish, dorado and others. Nearby is Manta's boatyard, where giant wooden fishing boats are built by hand on the edge of the sand.
