Pointe-A-Pitre is a bustling port city and is the main entry point into Guadeloupe, it is crammed with local markets and shops. It is usually best to visit the town in the morning (you can easily cover it in half a day), taking in the waterfront and outdoor market. The waterfront of Pointe-A-Pitre has been transformed from a bastion of old warehouses and cruise-terminal buildings into an architectural complex (Centre Saint-John-Perse), with three restaurants, 80 shops and boutiques, a bank, and the expanded headquarters of Guadeloupe's Port Authority, the centre is designed in contemporary French Caribbean style, which blends with the traditional architecture of Pointe-A-Pitre. The Aquarium de la Guadeloupe five kilometres east of Pointe-A-Pitre, has open turtle and shark aquariums. Nearby, not much remains of Fort Fleur-d'Épée a seventeenth-century Vauban-style military base, though it offers some great views.
