Portsmouth has its own sea port in Prince Rupert Bay. It is the second largest town in Dominica, it lies on the Indian River on Dominica's northwest coast, in Saint John Parish. Cabrits National Park was established in 1986, and is situated on a peninsula at the north end of the island, north of Portsmouth. The park protects tropical forest, coral reefs and wetlands, there is also an English garrison called Fort Shirley. Portsmouth was initially chosen as the capital of Dominica, but only served in that capacity in 1760, then the capital was moved to Roseau, where it remains. The island features lush mountainous rainforests, and is the home of many rare plant, animal, and bird species. There is a small colourful monument dedicated to Lord Cathcart and a line of shipwrecks piled up in the shallow waters behind the police station. A farmers market is held twice a week with local fruits and spices for sale.
